North Penn Alumnus Competes at 2012 Olympic Diving Trials
It seemed as if everyone was tuned into the 2012 Summer Olympics in London this year. But for one special North Penn alumnus, the 2012 Summer Olympics and the trials leading up to them was a personal and unforgettable experience.
The Olympic Trials – what every young and dedicated athlete dreams about for their sport. And for 2009 North Penn High School graduate, Zachary Nees, this dream became a reality. In June 2012, Zac traveled to Seattle, Washington, to compete at the U.S. Olympic Diving Trials in three events: the 3-Meter Springboard, 10-Meter Platform and Synchronized 3-Meter Springboard with partner, Samuel Dorman. Zac qualified for finals in two out of his three events, placing 7th in the Synchronized 3M Springboard and 12th in the 10M Platform.
For Kevin Nees, Zac’s father, seeing his son compete at the Olympic Trials was also a dream come true of a different sort. Kevin is battling colon cancer and wasn’t sure if he and his wife, Donna, could make the trip with the financial constraints his medical bills have put on them. The North Penn swimming and diving community heard of their predicament and began a grassroots fundraising effort to send the Nees to Seattle to see Zac compete. Through swimming and diving clinics, personal donations and a donation from Knights for Life, a newly created charitable organization by NPHS alumni, the Nees sat in the stands and watched their son dive for his dream thanks to the generosity of the North Penn community.
At North Penn High School, Zac was a member of the NPHS Boys Swimming and Diving team, captured the individual silver diving medal at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s State Championship Swimming and Diving Meet his senior year. Zac currently attends the University of Miami in Florida.
